Students
in the Honors Program enjoy the following benefits:
CLEP
General Exams: Incoming Honors Program students
are given the opportunity to earn as many as 24 credits
by taking CLEP General Exams at no charge.
Priority
registration: Students may register on the
first day of registration regardless of class standing.
This practically eliminates the possibility of being
closed out of a class.
Permission
to take up to 21 credit hours: Honors Program
students may register for up to 21 hours per semester
without special permission or extra charge. The normal
limit is 18 hours.
Permission
to challenge a course at no charge: Challenging
a course means that both the instructor and the student
think that the student already knows the course material,
and the instructor administers a final course exam
at the beginning of the semester.
Specially
designated advisors: Students are assigned
advisors who are department chairs or specially designated
representatives. This promotes special attention to
the needs of the Honors Program student.
Small
classes: Many Honors sections of core classes
have average enrollments of 5-15 students, allowing
maximum opportunity for meaningful interaction between
students and faculty.
Cultural
events: From their first weeks on campus,
students in the Honors Program are given special access
to Charleston's historical, musical, and artistic offerings.
Social
events: Each semester the Honors Program Council
plans social events ranging from luncheons to pizza
parties, providing opportunities for informal interaction
with peers, faculty, and university officials.
Recognition: Students
who fulfill the requirements of the Honors Program are
recognized at awards ceremonies and graduation and receive
Honors Program designation on their diplomas and transcripts.
