The Department of History and Political Science is a key part of the academic world of Charleston Southern University, and seeks to reinforce the mission of the university through the accomplishment of five major goals:
1. To equip all CSU students with a solid grounding in our culture's history and political institutions, and provide the core knowledge necessary for those students who wish to teach history at the primary and secondary level.
| 2. To provide the necessary instruction and preparation for students who wish to earn graduate degrees in history and political science, or attend law school. |
3. To give majors a liberal arts education that includes emphases on critical thinking, research, writing and interdisciplinary thinking and training.
4. To reveal to students the necessity of history, and of learning not only the facts, but also the motives and consequences of historical events and the relationship of those events to the present and future.
5. To provide the intellectual freedom for students to consider history and political science from a uniquely Christian perspective, and encourage the academic curiosity that will enhance individuals both spiritually and intellectually.
