Education

The People, The Programs, The Place for Graduate Education

The primary goal of the Master's programs in the School of Education is to prepare competent, caring, and committed teachers and administrators.

An Innovative Master's Program for Elementary and Secondary Teachers

Following propositions and procedures established by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), the School of Education in collaboration with the other schools and colleges on campus offers programs of study designed to refine teachers' understanding of their discipline, enhance their classroom teaching skills and encourage their leadership in the larger educational community. Graduates of the program are expected to exhibit a commitment to life-long learning based on an understanding of how to utilize an ever expanding knowledge base and the evolving nature of best practices to meet the needs of diverse learners.

Additionally, as candidates complete coursework that incorporates the processes of systematic inquiry, reflection and collaboration into class activities and assignments, they are given opportunities to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to seek National Board Certification for teachers. While becoming Board Certified is not a requirement for the Masters degree, graduates may choose to pursue it as a personal goal.

Continuing our Commitment to Excellent School Administration

Charleston Southern University is committed to providing quality preparation for administrators who will be challenged by the demands of the new century. Master of Education in Administration and Supervision candidates will participate in courses and practicum/intern activities which will enrich their perspectives and their understanding of the instructional, technological, interpersonal, political, legal, ethical and cultural matters of today's schools.

CSU offers the M.Ed. in Administration and Supervision degree at both the elementary and secondary levels. Successful completion of all program requirements leads to South Carolina certification as a principal and supervisor.

Those already holding a master's degree may pursue an individualized program of study for a master's +30 and/or add certification as an elementary or secondary school administrator.
