Name: Amanda Hobson
Year of Graduation: CSU 2007
Education: M.Ed., Harvard Graduate School of Education (www.gse.harvard.edu/)
Current Appointment: Harlem Children's Zone, First Grade Teacher
The Harlem Children's Zone is a community-based organization serving over 17,000 children living in a 100-city-block area in Harlem, NYC. The HCZ pipeline begins with The Baby College, a series of workshops for parents of children ages 0-3. The pipeline goes on to include best-practice programs for children of every age through college. The network includes in-school, after-school, social-service, health and community-building programs. I will be teaching first grade at one of the HCZ charter schools. These schools have a longer school day and year, and feature wide-ranging, enriching after-school programs. (http://www.hcz.org/)
Comment on how CSU Prepared you: As an Early Childhood Education major at Charleston Southern University I gained the tools I needed to begin teaching. After two years of teaching first grade I continued my education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Charleston Southern prepared me for graduate school by providing a strong foundation of pedagogy. I am very thankful for my time at CSU and will continue to draw upon my experiences and learning as I begin my new job at the Harlem Children's Zone. |
