The
residence halls are now using wireless technology to
access the Internet. In response to requests from students,
the CSU administration approved making wireless Internet
technology a part of the residence hall package in the
fall of 2001. The wireless system has several advantages
over the old dial-up system. Some of these advantages
are keeping phone lines free for incoming calls, a much
higher connection speed and the ability to have every
student in a dorm room connected simultaneously.
In
order to use the wireless network the student's desktop
computer must meet a few requirements.
Each
computer that needs to access the network needs to have
an 802.11b compatible wireless network device. This device
may be internal or external depending on your computer's
features. These devices are available through the university
bookstore at a reduced cost. You will also need a current
copy of virus scan software loaded on your computer.
If you do not have any virus scan software you will not
be allowed to get on the network without this software.
If
you need to obtain a copy of this software, it may be
purchased at the university bookstore. For questions,
contact David Ackerman at ext. 7762.
