The Student Government Association of Charleston Southern University is an organization formed to protect the rights of students and ensure a continuous exchange of ideas and opinions between the students and administration. SGA strives to promote a widespread interest in student affairs, to further the activities of student life, and to develop a greater spirit of progressive citizenship. SGA seeks to promote the general welfare and to protect the enumerated rights of students.
The SGA is made up of three branches:
1. Executive Branch: Includes three officers--President, Vice-President, and Secretary/Treasurer
2. Legislative Branch: A Senate comprised of twenty-eight student Senators. Seven representatives are elected from each class. Each Senator is assigned to a committee. Current standing committees are Judicial, Food Services, Academic, Student Affairs, Buildings and Grounds and Commuter Affairs. Each committee is headed by a chairperson who also serves on the President's Cabinet. The term of office is one year for all senators. Senate Meetings are held Mondays at 4 p.m. in the Whitfield Stadium Conference Room. Senate meetings are open to all students unless otherwise specified.
3. Judicial Branch: Made of the House Council and Committee of Discipline.
How Do I Join?
Students who maintain a GPA of 2.0 are eligible to run and serve on Senate. Class representation is determined by credit hours earned. Freshmen are encouraged to run for Senate.
