Graphic Design Course Descriptions 

 

Drawing I (Art 211) (3 hours) Creative and structural drawing concentrating on the figure and objects in nature. Students are introduced to perspective drawing and will received plenty of one-on-one training from their instructor. Projects will be geared towards beginner and intermediate artists to advance student skill level on an individual basis. Drawing materials will be provided. 

Beginning Design (Art 215) Beginning Design is an introductory studio course designed to help students gain familiarity with a variety of media and design processes. Learn the critique process and get to know your fellow classmates while receiving one-on-one attention from your instructor.  

Visual Communication (Art 216)  VisCom is a continuation of Beginning Design but takes place in the Mac Lab. Students will work on many of the same visual concepts introduced in previous courses however the primary tool will be Adobe Illustrator. By the end of this course students will have a very strong understanding of how to use Illustrator and have a strong appreciation for creating vector artwork.

Digital Illustration (Art 220) Art 220 will continue students down the path of mastering Adobe Illustrator. Here each student will be drawing and scanning their own works and digitizing them as they turn their drawings into their own vector renderings suitable for a broad variety of digital media.  

Digital Image Editing (Art 221) ART 216 offers an introduction to basic principles of digital image manipulation. Students will spend most of their time mastering Photoshop. We start with the basics of the selection process and minor image adjustments. Eventually we complete the course by creating composite posters that blend together a variety of components chosen by the student for a realistic final project.  

History of Design (Art 313) History of Design offers a closer look at Art History throughout the ages through the lens of a graphic designer. How was type formed? How did we learn to interpret the visual imagery we take for granted today. Art 313 takes a closer look at semiotics and the foundational principles cultures use to communicate visually. Students also work on design projects indicative of specific periods in history.  

Business of Design (Art 418) Almost half of all dollars that change hands in the graphic design field do so through small companies of one or two people. Freelancing is not a last ditch effort to generate revenue, it can make for a great career! Students learn the ins and outs of running small design agency and how to sell their services in a professional and ethical manner. How do you specialize, network, advertise and draft contracts for prospective clients? The Business of Design class offers answers to these questions while continually refining the student portfolio. Guest speakers are also invited to provide student’s insight on a variety of elements surrounding the design industry. 

Graphic Design Portfolio (Art 450) This is where all the student’s work comes together. Students focus on the developing a strong portfolio displaying their work both in print as well as online. The application and interview process will also be reviewed and guest speakers are invited to provide insights to the hiring process. 

Graphic Design Internship (Art 400) Most graphic design majors will complete an internship at some point in their junior or senior year. The Charleston area has a strong design industry and our students have found themselves designing packaging, shooting models, promoting sports teams and so much more. In many cases internships have turned into full time jobs for students. Internship availability is for on-ground students only.
