The Charleston Southern campus is situated just minutes from historic Charleston, South Carolina. The university is acclaimed annually in national publications as one of the best colleges in the South and is fully experienced in summer camp operations, hosting thousands of campers annually. Leading music educators from the region will join the Horton School of Music faculty and Summer Music Camp staff to provide both a quality musical experience and fun week for all campers.

From Monday afternoon registration through the end of camp on Saturday, campers will enjoy a nonstop mix of ensemble rehearsals, masterclass and sectional rehearsals, structured recreation, evening entertainment, and social activities. In addition to ensemble rehearsals, campers will also have the option of receiving a half-hour or hour private lesson if desired.

Saturday evening recitals and concerts will conclude the camp, with performances by all campers. The performances are free and open to the public, with family and friends of music campers encouraged to attend. Join us for this exciting week of Summer Music Camp at Charleston Southern University.

Band & Strings

Instrumental campers will be placed in ensembles according to age and experience, with a brief audition necessary at check-in for those band students with two years of experience for the Junior Bands. Sectionals and masterclasses are scheduled daily, and all instrumental campers will have an hour music elective of their choice. Each instrumental student will be expected to furnish his or her own instrument and bring a folding metal music stand. Only concert percussion equipment and pianos will be available from the Horton School of Music.

Choir & Music Theatre

Vocal campers will participate in a variety of ensembles during the week, ranging from small theatre sketches to medium chamber choir to large camp chorus. Instruction in vocal techniques and masterclasses will compliment the ensemble experience. All vocal campers will have an hour music elective of their choice. Some campers will have the opportunity to explore music theatre in depth.

Piano

Piano Camp will be available to students from grades six through 12 who have performed on piano for at least two years. Instruction in technique, literature, musicianship, ensemble performance and theory will be a part of the camp. Each piano camp student will receive four half-hour private lessons during the camp and will also participate by singing in a mixed chorus. Total price for the Piano Camp is $400, which includes lessons. Piano campers should bring at least three pieces of standard literature (no pop arrangements, please) to camp, two of which should be performance ready.

Percussion Camp of the Carolinas

A week long camp of clinics and hands-on sessions in marching percussion, concert percussion, steel band, drumset and world percussion. Marching percussion studies will focus on the essentials needed to advance your marching percussion skills to rival some of the of the most experienced drum corps. Concert percussion studies will develop the student's knowledge and skills in playing keyboard percussion instruments, concert snare drum, timpani and accessory percussion instruments found in concert band and percussion ensemble. In the steel band studies, students will learn how to play the tradition steel pans of Trinidad and Tobago, in addition to learning about the history of these beautiful instruments. During the drumset portion of camp, students will experience what it takes to be a versatile drumset musician. Students will learn the many styles required to play in their school's jazz band, steel band or as a pit orchestra musician. The world percussion portion of the camp will focus on Latin percussion typically found in jazz music. In addition, students will learn how to play world percussion instruments like the cajon and djembe, also participating in a large sized drum circle!
