Strobel makes clear Case for Christ
November 11, 2009
John Strubel
Speaking to Charleston Southern University and Lowcountry church leaders Tuesday night, New York Times best-selling author Lee Strobel confessed as a teenager he believed there was, “… no all-powerful, all-loving, all-knowing creator of the universe.”
Strobel was an atheist.
The former legal editor at Chicago Tribune, Strobel was a skeptic of Christianity. He was taught to be a skeptic. He was encouraged to be skeptic. As is the case with most journalists, over time those learned behaviors became instinct. His ability to question everything became part of his DNA.
Surely he could poke a few holes in Christianity, right? Strobel began compiling his case evidence. He poked, prodded and interviewed scholars, medical forensic experts, archaeologists and studied ancient history, gathering facts and figures. Two years and a stack of paper later, Strobel concluded it came down to one question: “Did Jesus, or did he not, return from the dead? If he didn’t, that’s the ballgame.”
The author laid out that very evidence in his 1998 best-selling book The Case for Christ. This past summer, Charleston Southern required incoming freshman to read the book as an introduction to the CSU’s vision of Integrating Faith in Learning, Leading and Serving.
This week, Strobel recounted his first days of faith and summed up “Why we believe?” in four “E” principles: execution, eyewitnesses, empty and evidence.
Execution: “You have to have death before you can have a resurrection. There is no controversy among scholars in the field that Jesus died on the cross. This is beyond controversy. This is something that is settled among ancient historians.”
Eyewitnesses: “I thought, like a lot of skeptics, that Jesus’ death was a mere legend. What I discovered decimates the claim that the resurrection is a legend. There are eyewitnesses that, even skeptics, that go back – this is like a newsflash – to the scene of the event.
Empty: “There is no body in the tomb … and over time Jesus appears to eyewitnesses after the resurrection – 515 eyewitnesses. I thought, ‘there’s got to be a loophole. There’s got to be an explanation.’ I said, ‘wait a minute, these are just hallucinations.’ I went to an expert and laid out all the evidence. I’ll never forget what he said, ‘Lee, 515 people having the same hallucination, at the same time, would be a bigger miracle than the resurrection.’”
Evidence: “To retain my atheism in the face of all the evidence that so powerfully led toward the truth of Christianity, it would be like swimming upstream against a torrent of evidence. I couldn’t do that.”
Strobel retreated to his bedroom, legal pad in one hand and pen in the other. He began writing down facts, backed with evidence. Today, he admits it was those irrefutable pieces of evidence that answered the burning question – “Did Jesus return from the dead?”
Strobel realized God was real. Jesus died on the cross for our sins and, three days later, rose from the dead. He dropped to his knees and poured out his heart.
