War Veteran Speaks at Chapel

University Relations // 10.26.2016

Clebe McCalry

Motivational speaker Clebe McClary was at Chapel Oct. 26. McClary is a veteran of the Vietnam War where he was critically wounded in battle.

The former Marine was awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts for his bravery and protection of his men. He has endured countless operations and was in the hospital for 2 ½ years. His wife, Deanna, stood by his side through all of it.

It was at a presentation by former baseball player Bobby Richardson that Clebe and Deanna realized that being a Christian wasn’t just about the external but rather an internal relationship with Christ. He challenged students to value perseverance and character. “You don’t need to be characters,” said McClary. “You need to have character.”

He used the acronym FIDO to stand for Forget It and Drive On. McClary said, Jesus never said to forget people. But we can learn from the things that happen and then drive on.
