Move In Day Tips for Students -- and Parents

University Relations // 08.16.2016

Moving into the residence halls for the first time can be exciting, fun and nerve wracking. And the day isn’t just emotion filled for students. Parents will experience the full range of emotions, too.

Charleston Southern University staff and students will be on hand Friday, Aug. 19 to help make the transition as painless as possible. In addition, local churches and businesses will set up around the residence halls with ice water, snacks and giveaways.

College Parents of America offers this advice: “Be prepared for high tensions. Try to be patient with one another.”

Here are some tips to help the day run smoothly:

  • Once you are on campus, let students ask questions about where to sign in, what comes next, etc., and let them introduce themselves to the roommate. After all, you’ve been preparing them for this step for years, and you need to show them you have confidence they will make it on their own.
  • Help with moving their belongings into the room and unpacking. Leave the bulk of the decorating and negotiating to your student and their new roommate. This provides a bonding experience for students and establishes their space.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Don’t worry if you’ve forgotten something. There are plenty of inexpensive places close to campus for essentials.
  • When it’s time to go at the end of the day, go. You won’t help your student by lingering.
  • It’s not the time for long lectures or speeches.
  • Ask questions; we are here to help.

CSU has planned events for students and parents that will set your student up for success.

Parents of freshman athletes have a meeting at 1 p.m. in the Field House.

All parents are invited to the Parent Reception at 1:30 in Whitfield Center for Christian Leadership for a time of refreshments and learning about services available to students.

The parents’ meeting is at 3 p.m. in Lightsey Chapel Auditorium. You will learn more about what you and your student can expect in the first semester of college.

All students and parents are invited to the President’s Luau from 4 to 6 p.m. in the dining hall. At the end of the meal, it will be time to say good-bye.

Students have several events planned for Friday evening starting with Playfair at 6:30 p.m. in the Field House, a high energy event designed to help students meet new friends, and continuing with The Movement at 8 p.m. in the Chapel, a worship time that will usher in the start of an amazing year.

Above all, remember that it is normal to feel emotional. This is a big step for your family. And the CSU family will help your student feel right at home.
