South Carolina’s Teacher of the Year, Jennifer Wise of Columbia, spoke to CSU’s Teaching Fellows and high school Teacher Cadets recently.
Wise is spending the year promoting education through S.C.’s Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention and Advancement.
Wise teaches 7th and 8th grade mathematics and keeps a picture of herself in the 7th grade in her classroom to show the students she knows what they are going through.
She credits her mother with many of her education ideas. Her mother taught her that the students in her classroom are her family. Wise and her husband intentionally purchased a house in the middle of the school district where she teaches, and she told her husband, “We’re going to be the house that gives away good candy at Halloween.” Her students know they are welcome in her home.
“You have the opportunity to pour into others,” said Wise. She said her goal in talking to future teachers is to get them to say, “I can be a teacher.”
