Title: FOUNDATION STUDIES ADMISSIONS PARAMETERS
Number: A-4
Date of Inception: November 21, 1994

CATEGORY 1. Those students whose records reflect the following information meet the academic criteria for acceptance by the Office of Admissions for the Foundation Studies Program. Further determination of the student's correct placement within the program will be determined by the Director of Foundation Studies and the Director of Academic Advising:

  1. The SAT (or ACT equivalent) --
    upper bound = Verbal 400/Math 400 (recentered Sp.95. V 480/M 440)
    lower bound = Verbal 300/Math 300 (recentered Sp.95. V 380/M 340)

  2. The student has completed Algebra I, preferably with a grade of C or better.

  3. a) For the student who has taken a College Preparatory curriculum, the student should have a GPR of at least 2.0 in his or her core classes.

    b) For the student who has taken a combination of College Prep., Tech. Prep., and General courses, the student should have a GPR of at least 2.5 in his or her core classes.

    c) For the student who has taken a combination of College Prep. and Tech. Prep. courses, the student should have a GPR of at least 2.5 in his or her core classes.

CATEGORY 2. International students whose SAT Verbal scores are low (below 300) must score at least 550 on the TOEFL and 4 on the TWE. If they meet these requirements plus those listed above or their national equivalents, they will be considered for FSP acceptance. These will have to be examined on a case by case basis.

CATEGORY 3. Any student whose SAT scores are above the upper bounds of those limits listed in Category 1 but whose high school performance indicates the student might be at academic risk will be considered by the Director of Academic Advising and the Director of Foundation Studies.

For those with uneven performances in their academic core, the Director of Foundation Studies may ask the Office of Admissions to request additional information. These applicants' records will be evaluated on a case by case basis.

CATEGORY 4. The student whose scores are below the lower bounds, but whose high school performance is outstanding and whose GPR in the core is high, is a possible candidate for Foundation Studies Admission. The applicant should first be advised to retake the SAT or ACT, but if the scores still remain low, the application could be referred to the Director of Foundation Studies and the Director of Academic Advising.

CATEGORY 5. The student who has taken the GED should be evaluated as a candidate for FSP Admissions. The Office of Admissions will advise the student to submit any materials (recommendations from past high school instructors or additional standardized test scores) which might indicate where the student is academically strong or weak. The applicant will then be referred by Admissions to the Director of Foundation Studies and the Director of Academic Advising for further evaluation.

By action of the Admissions Committee and Senior Officers, November 21, 1994.
