Title: ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY
Number: R-8
Date of Inception: March 4, 1994

Purpose: To establish the environmental policy for Charleston Southern University.

  1. As a function of Christian stewardship and in accordance with the general Christian philosophy of Charleston Southern University, it is necessary to establish a policy framework for our University family to ensure that all possible actions are taken by this institution to minimize any adverse effect of this University on the local environment. To this end, every reasonable opportunity will be made to minimize any adverse effect on the local environment. These actions will include recycling of all types of waste materials deemed practical.
  2. The University previously provided initial funding which, along with grants and income for reclaimed products, should provide all necessary funding for this program. A properly developed recycling program will not only pay for itself in the future, but should also benefit Charleston Southern University through reduced waste disposal costs.
  3. Our environment policy, along with the new Environmental Management program in the School of Business, not only demonstrates the resolve of Charleston Southern University to train leaders for the future in the area, but also to demonstrate the determination of Charleston Southern University to improve the local environment and to teach responsible and Christian stewardship by example.

Recommended by Environmental/Recycling Committee and approved by action of the President's Cabinet on July 5, 1994.
