Information for Students Awarded Special Needs Accommodations
"Okay, I’ve received my letter notifying me of the specific Special Needs Accommodations I’ve been awarded. What happens next?"
1. If the letter contains any information that you don't understand, make an appointment with Dr. Rick Martinez, to have your questions answered. He may be contacted at (843) 863-8025. It's critical that you fully understand what you're entitled to so that you can speak with your professors.
2. A copy of your notification letter is forwarded to the Registrar's office for their files.
3. Once you have registered for classes, a copy of your notification letter is sent to each professor by the Student Success Center, along with a memorandum outlining further instructions to them concerning procedures for special testing, etc. Important! This process is repeated each semester using the original notification letter(s). If you do not want your professors to be notified, you must submit a written statement to that effect to Dr. Rick Martinez in the Student Success Center.
4. Bear in mind that if you add a class after the notification letters have been sent out, you will need to contact the Student Success Center to request that a notification letter be sent out to your new professor.
5. Communicate with your professors. Introduce yourself…let them know who you are. Even though your professors have been notified and are committed to providing you with the accommodations you’ve been awarded, only you can ensure you are receiving all the services you’re entitled to. Many students have chosen not to take advantage of all the accommodations they’ve been awarded. Therefore, don’t make the assumption that your professors will automatically know who you are and seek you out. You must take the initiative!

"What if I feel I need additional Special Needs Accommodations?
All requests must be made in writing and submitted to the Student Success Center. Additional requests are handled in the same manner as your original request. Once the Special Needs Committee meets and has made a decision on your request, a new notification letter will be sent to you (and your professors) outlining the additional accommodations you have been awarded.
